LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver
- LCD Soundsystem’s Sound of Silver is a sleek fusion of techno, funk, and pop all packed into a very audible lot. Vocalists James Murphy and Eric Broucek each have their own unique and varied tone which they bring to each and every track. The band does use some out-of-the-ordinary instruments throughout, but that only adds to the album’s miscellaneous flavor.
“Get Innocuous!” has Murphy on the synthesizer as well as on drums for a metered and toxic beat that listeners will find impossible to pry from their minds. Murphy also uses the Casio keyboard to bring an even more unusual tone to the song and will make younger listeners harken back to their childhood and a time when that instrument was all the rage.
On “Time To Get Away,” the intro might remind some of the classic Michael Jackson song, “Billie Jean.” Murphy is back with measured drum play. The vocalist tries to imitate Prince on this track by varying his tempo and sound with intermittent high pitched chords. It seems the band is trying to convey a need to escape from a certain someone, with lyrics like, “It’s time to get away, it’s time to get away, it’s time to get away from you.” There is also mingled electronic percussion work from Murphy, which furthers the electronica and techno agenda.
“North American Scum” has hand clapping from Tyler Pope, Murphy, Broucek and Marcus Lambkin. Pope also lends his bass playing skills and Murphy aids him in that endeavor as well. Patrick Mahoney’s percussion work evens things out but Murphy’s electronic percussion play is erected yet again in the form of somewhat irritating buzzing which might dissuade some listeners. But, they would be missing out on a hilarious song which has the band dispelling the falsehood that they hail from outside the United States and gives their take on how it is to be a musical group on the road, with lyrics like, “I’ll admit I don’t know oh where to begin. We are North Americans. And for those few who still think we’re from England, we’re not. We’ve been on planes and on trains until we think we might die. We’re far from North America, where the buildings are old…I hate the feeling when you’re lookin’ at me that way. Cuz we’re North Americans, but if we act all shy it will make it okay, it makes it go away.”
LCD Soundsystem’s Sound of Silver has an eclectic mixture of techno, electronica and funk for an album that will satisfy fans of several musical genres. The lyrics on some of the tracks might sound odd and a tad foreign to some listeners but the imagery and playfulness with which the band executes these songs is not to be overlooked.
