The Graduate - Anhedonia
- The Graduate’s album title, Anhedonia, means being unable to enjoy activities that most people normally find pleasure in. The album contains your stereotypical teenage angst lyrics of broken hearts and isolation in a suburban wasteland, without being too whiney and emo about it.
The album’s title track is about the lead singer, Corey Warning, going to a basement party and feeling completely out of place as he grapples with trying to fit in, but wanting to stay far away from the group, as he sings, “But I don't feel right in my skin, so I don't feel anything at all, I leave emotion at the door, like a desperate boy on last call.” Sound like anyone else’s late childhood?
One doesn’t stand up and take notice of Anhedonia until later in the record, as if the young band is not comfortable with their sound until then. The most unique part of the album is the interlude. It is that of a dance tune, rapid paced and synthed out on a keyboard, building up to a louder chord progression; then there is a drum roll and The Graduate goes into a more hardcore hook and the keyboard jumps back in again at the same time.
It immediately goes into the edgy “Doppelganger,” which alludes to drug use and coming down from being high. Throughout the remainder of the record, Warning experiments subtly with vocal range and Anhedonia becomes more fast paced.
The Graduate definitely has the potential to be a great punk rock band and with more experience (they’ve only been together a year and a half) they can take the world by storm.
