Mike DiRubbo Quartet - New York Accent
- New York Accent, by the Mike DiRubbo Quartet, has an amalgamation of instrumental tracks that are upbeat, and some more pensive. Either way, the instrumentation is practiced, precise and a delight to hear.

“Clarity” has lively saxophone work along with piano and smooth percussion work. At times, the percussion and the saxophone seem to be in absolute synchronization with each other, which only adds to the infectious melody of the song.

On “The Sage,” there is misty drum work, more percussion play and this time the saxophone work is languid and some of the notes persist for a facund tone. It’s a song that could be played in a motion picture where a character is pondering their next action and goes to a wiser character for guidance.

“New Year’s Dream” is a song one is guaranteed to hear as the genesis of the New Year looms. It begins with drum work that has an anticipatory vibe to it which enacts the title of the song. There is aerated saxophone play that enters the song later on, that is cool. This song could be one in a movie where the main character is at a New Year’s gala dancing away and awaiting the happenings of the coming year.

“Prelude to a Kiss” begins with a piano intro and the leisurely sax play comes into the song thereafter. This is a song that one might hear as they slip into a dimly-lit piano bar. It could also be played at a focal point in a drama motion picture where two people are on the verge of connecting, staring into each other’s eyes and the audience is waiting with bated breath for their lips to touch.

On “She’s Always a Woman,” the band covers this classic from the “Piano Man” himself, Billy Joel. Originally released on Joel’s 1977 album, The Stranger, the Mike DiRubbo Quartet instrumentally mimics the song flawlessly with impeccable piano, percussion and saxophone work that does the Joel standard proud.

Mike DiRubbo Quartet’s New York Accent has songs that are ideal to listen to as you wonder the streets of the “City that Never Sleeps,” and is also outstanding to listen to if you are a fan of instrumentation at its finest.
