The Showdown - Temptation Come My Way
- Temptation Come My Way, from the Tennessee quintet known as The Showdown, could remind listeners of heralded hard rock band Metallica. David Bunton’s vocals have the same powerful bend as James Hetfield’s, and the instrumentation throughout the album is so potent it will be impossible for you to shy away from.
“Fanatics and Whores” has dominant drum work from Andrew Hall in the intro, followed by ripping guitar work from Travis Bailey and Josh Childers. The rhythm of the song could make listeners think they are about to hear a power ballad with the intense build up. Bunton’s vocals are hard as he emotes scathing lines like, “Lost and cold and lonely with a gut full of nothing…But my fuse is just a string…hid beneath your wings…Lay my head down…But I’m not afraid, put my head down just believe the stars will work the pain. Cuz I’m not afraid. Life and love ever after…We go from sin to deadly sin. I don’t know what the attraction is but I don’t see it end.”
On “Head Down,” there are commanding guitar riffs from Bailey and Childers that will rev up listeners. The drum play from Hall moves in later. Bunton then kicks in with unassailable talk about personal demons, with lyrics like, “We are your silver linin'...The sin we take your bullets and take your stand…For each and every sin. Cuz storms of lead we screamed and bled don’t read on me she said…Watch this from my dream…It might have been a heavy heart beating like thunder, bastard sons…Our hearts beat still with six feet under.” The pounding guitar and drum work brings home the foreboding pace of the song as Bunton expounds about things felt after death.
“Six Feet Under” continues with heavy drum work from Hall, and forceful guitar play from Bailey and Childers. The rampant speed of this song makes it one that could be in a motion picture such as The Fast and the Furious, where racing is involved and high-octane action is inevitable. Bunton’s heated vocals sound even more similar to Hetfield’s on this track, which talks about pulse pounding events, on lines like, “Move in circles and unwind. Feel the rhythm and the light. Are you satisfied? Feel the need and just collide. Swear your just best intent and ride…Move so fast you come undone. We die young.” One can also blast this song as they are barreling down a highway to parts unknown, looking for the next adventure.
The Showdown’s Temptation Come My Way is an album from a band that is positioning themselves to be a formidable hard rock group in the Metallica mold. Yet, Bunton’s vocals have a singular rhythm, possibly hiding some secret pain that makes the lyrics resonate even further with listeners. Either way, with this album, the band seems to be poised for a bright future.
