Richard Thompson - Sweet Warrior
- Richard Thompson’s Sweet Warrior is the artist’s first “plugged-in” album since 2003’s The Old Kit Bag. This album is a blend of celtic, rock and folk songs all with one thing in common, they all talk about defeat and disloyalty. Thompson’s voice mopes on each track and listeners can ascertain the depth of his pain.
“Needle and Thread” talks about how Thompson has come across breeds of different women and they all have done him wrong, as he belts out lyrics like, “I see young girls with old faces. I see good girls in bad places. I see plain girls in finery. And every one will be the death of me. Needle and thread, needle and thread. Hand me down my needle and thread. I said hey hey hey hey hey hey hey hey hey.”
“I’ll Never Give Up” has a rhythmic beat that gets quite repetitious and mournful at times. Thompson emotes about things he cannot accomplish because his lady is cheating on him, as he croons lyrics such as, “I can’t eat. I can’t sleep. Knowin’ that you’re on your midnight creep. I can’t jump. I can’t jive. Knowin’ that you want me dead or alive. There’s no halfway with you…Hit me where it hurts…But I’m never givin’ up, I’m never givin’ up.” Thompson's lamentable tone will make listeners feel bad for his situation and yet respect his resolve.
“Take Care the Road You Choose” has slow drum and acoustic guitar work and has an old-time country feel to it. Thompson warns listeners to beware what path they choose in life, with lyrics like, “If I ever get out of these shoes…I come lookin’ at all the ways to places…Last ditch rendezvous. There had been some other places. Some other time to find me…Not lookin’ for ghosts behind me. I gonna hold you with my fingers…Sometimes there’s no telling. Take care the road you choose.” Listeners can ascertain from Thompson’s cheerless tone of voice that he is speaking from experience and wishes to caution others against making the same mistakes he did.
Richard Thompson’s Sweet Warrior is an album that is perfect for listeners to wallow to. If they are looking for an artist who shares their bad luck in love and voices it in song, then this Sweet Warrior is there for them.
