Blacktop Mourning - No Regret
- Blacktop Mourning’s dark and energetic new release, No Regret, sounds like a musical version of a bad day with its elements of frustration and sorrow. However, the songs are by no means weak; there is also a voice of power in the often heavy instrumentation. The melodies range from hard and fast to slow and melancholy, which makes it nearly impossible to pigeonhole the band’s sound.
All of the songs on the album are great, but a few tracks stand out as extraordinary. “Halfway to Midnight” has a catchy, almost pop-like chorus, but the guitar riffs that shine prominently during the chorus give the song a hard edge. The final track on the album, “As Time Crawls By,” is similar in that it is upbeat enough to end the CD on a positive note, but is still true to the dark tone of the other songs. The song finishes up with an awesome guitar solo; no wonder, considering that one of the band members was a prodigy on the instrument.
Some of the tracks have a slower pace and less guitar thrashing, but are still full of energy. “Don’t Defend” includes a piano and some unusual string sounds as an enhancement. While the track doesn’t stray far from the band’s rock theme, the less intense feel and quiet vocal breaks keep the album’s overall sound from becoming stagnant. The same goes for “Hardly Recognize.” It’s a sad song about a failing relationship that is just as entertaining as the album’s faster music.
No Regret is obviously the creation of talented musicians and singers. The album is full of captivating sounds and lyrics that never waver for a second.
