American Catapult - Trees of Mystery
- American Catapult’s “Trees of Mystery,” is the band’s third album since 2004, but their first on Further South Recordings. The upbeat tracks on the album are the perfect background music to blast while on a road trip with good friends barreling toward new and unknown adventures. “This Time,” is the quintessential song to play on a long excursion. It deals with never giving up and just doing despite any snags and/or pitfalls in the way, as the vocalist belts out lines like, “Yeah, this time give in standing. A slow burn is never for nothing. . . it's already done it's still worth doing.” The guitar and drum work are inspirational and coincide with the feel good lyrics. On the title track, there is guitar, drum and even percussion work. Its beat is slightly more reserved than the previous song, but it still will exhilarate listeners. The vocalist’s timbre is also more reticent as he croons about expectation and a feeling of substance being unleashed with lines like, “Lays down the line . . . still hopes to find. Shakin’ and breakin’ apart. It’s coming out. It’s coming out.” Although the pace of the song is slower, it doesn’t diminish the sense of gratification one will feel while listening to the song. On “Easily Distracted,” there is what sounds like practiced bass guitar in the intro, which differs from the prior songs. Then, rhythmic drum play brings a rock feel to the track. The vocalist then goes on about how, at times in his life, he has been diverted from his objectives and,, looking back he regrets how easily he strayed from his original path with lines like, “Moments gone but not forgotten. Just like lightning in a bottle . . . I’m not fond of these surroundings, but I surrendered way too soon . . . yeah, yeah. All this talk, little action. And I’ve always good intentions too . . . words won’t do. I have taken much for granted . . . should have seen this coming, but I’m easily distracted . . . less hours of wasted time. It’s a sure sign.” The vocalist seems to be saying that, despite his well meaning purpose, his wandering mind took him away from things and he now laments those actions. Listeners can hear the grieving in his voice as it gets sullen from time to time. “Whirlwind,” talks about objects that can throw one’s life into a tailspin. There is harder guitar play at work on this track, along with cadenced drumming that corresponds with the meaning of the song. The singer’s voice is subdued as he goes on about feelings and items that spin us around with lines such as, “Tempers dim, and teacups spin. Movin’ restless minds . . . even twist. Now it’s nervous time. Oh it’s twisting, turning, moving like a whirlwind . . . distance makes him proud. These are the dreams of what he wants to be he dreams being loud. Oh it’s twisting, turning, moving like a whirlwind.” The song seems to be talking about a man who is trying to find himself, but feels like he is caught in an endless cyclone trying to do so. American Catapult’s “Trees of Mystery,” is an appropriate title for album filled with songs about finding one’s way in life and traversing down all different paths in a rigorous effort to find some sense of self.
