Octobop - Very Early
- Talented instrumentalists and lively jazz sounds are the main components of Octobop’s newest album, Very Early. The title is appropriate, considering two of their other album titles are After Dark and Night Lights.
The musicians who performed on the CD created 12 great pieces that never sound like elevator music. The music seems more suited for something like a dimly-lit, fancy restaurant. All of the pieces, even the more energetic ones, have a touch of elegance in them.
The songs showcase soloists on saxophone, vibraphone and several other instruments. In a few of the pieces, the solos are played one after another. The solos complement each other and give the songs more depth. The pieces would be fairly dull if they contained only one solo per song.
The album includes the “Pink Panther” theme, which I wasn’t sure I would like since I’ve heard it so many times. Even though Octobop’s version isn’t much different than others that are out there, it’s still very well-played and sounds fresh.
I can’t compare Very Early to other releases by the band, but I can imagine the other albums are written and performed just as well as this one.
