Moolamantra - Sat Chit Ananda
- The Moolamantra CD, titled Sat Chit Ananda, is definitely a departure from mainstream music. It has an ethereal, dreamlike quality that is appropriate, considering the meaning behind the music.
According to thepathtooneness.org, the Moolamantra is intended to evoke “the living God, asking protection and freedom from all sorrow and suffering.” This album undoubtedly portrays that feeling. The music is slow and meditative, but there are some flaws in the album as well.
The songs on the album have a similar feel, but are still different from each other. The first track sounds a little spooky. A male voice repeats an incantation, and the sound of slowly trickling water is heard in the background. In contrast, the second track is slightly more upbeat. Female voices sing the lyrics, and the song utilizes instruments like guitars, brass instruments, drums and cymbals.
Track 4 of the CD is a return to the creepy nature of the first song. These eerie tracks seem unusual considering religion is supposed to be about peace. I would enjoy this album a lot more if it didn’t set me on edge.
Track 2 was great, but not good enough to compensate for the spooky nature of several of the other tracks. I really can’t imagine using those songs as a religious or meditative tool; they’re just unnerving.
