Amy Cooper - Mirrors
- Amy Cooper’s “Mirrors” has songs that are filled with metaphors of life’s occurrences both good and bad. Cooper mesmerizes listeners with her magnetic vocals, and the instrumentation is simple. It doesn’t diminish Cooper’s thought provoking messages on each track. The first song has a quick bout of what sounds like static in the intro then segues into drum and guitar work. Cooper’s vocals are calm as she emotes about identifying something in her counterpart’s stare and how she longs for him with lines such as, “There’s somethin’ in your eyes that I can recognize. I want you but I got to wait…Your hand upon my waist. We move through, it’s much too late.” The slow pace of the song signals to listeners that Cooper is biding her time as her desire smolders. The second track starts right off with basic guitar work. Then almost immediately, Cooper’s voice emerges with an acerbic tone as she slyly sings about falling back into an unpleasant pattern because of a certain male in her life. “I fell back into you but I’ve hit the ground. Now all that’s left is an echoing sound. It won’t be long until I disappear…Get back together again. Get back together again.” Cooper’s piquant voice might confuse listeners since she is singing about reuniting with her beloved but she is also talking about the bad things that have come out of their hookup. The third track has a pop-like vibe to it complete with more guitar and drum play. Cooper seems to be saying goodbye to her partner because he has hoodwinked her. The relationship was once something she wanted to be a part of, but now she feels like she was ambushed and is in need of deliverance from this person. She croons lines such as, “I need a rescue…I don’t pretend to love you. Honey I know you fake it most of the time…Leave me out in the rain. Feeling nothing but shame. Pull me in and now I’m under water all my limbs moving out of control…Don’t bother I’ve got to swim in the undertow it took my love to get her. Now my love is letting you go. You will never get to know.” One can envision listeners singing this to a boyfriend or girlfriend they are breaking up. Amy Cooper’s “Mirrors” has some phenomenal breakup songs that have a catchy beat, which might make listeners forget the somber messages in most tracks. Her lyrics have real thought behind them and listeners won’t be able to escape being drawn into the images Cooper projects.
