Frank Black - Best of Frank Black ’93-‘03
- Frank Black’s “Best of Frank Black ’93-’03” is an anthology of his greatest solo triumphs. The Pixies' front-man has a high-strung voice that at times croons lyrics of double or mixed messages that will delight his staunch fans, but that might discombobulate others.

“Los Angeles” has easygoing guitar work in the intro as Black talks about people he has met in the “City of Angels.” He nimbly emotes lines like, “I met a man. He was a good man, sellin’ insurance…Oh yeah, I wanna live in Los Angeles.” As the song continues the pace of the guitar gets hardy and speedy, possibly mirroring the nonstop life of those who live in the flashy town.

On “Ten Percenter” there is electric guitar and drum work that reverberates as the song begins, and as it progresses the song’s tempo increases exponentially. Black goes on to wail about feeling irretrievable and not giving all of himself even though he knows he can and should with lines like, “I’m just another ten percenter and my mind is like an ocean. My mind is like an ocean. I’m hangin’ on the harbor.” It seems Black is at a loss and is hanging by a thread and not confident of his next course of action.

“Old Black Dawning” has upbeat acoustic guitar in the intro followed by commanding electric guitar riffs. Both instruments echo as Black sings about a female experiencing an aurora: “She tried to stand but wasn’t able. She tried to find the truth…Old black dawning is comin’ on. Old black dawning is comin’ on.”

“Threshold Apprehension” is a track from Black’s upcoming “Bluefinger" album, which is slated for release in September 2007. It has electric bass in the intro with intermittent abeyances in between the riffs. On this track Black uses high-pitched bawls to expresses his berserk emotional state with lines like, “Talk to the hand…Some people die and they start to get old…Threshold apprehension…I got threshold apprehension.”

Frank Black’s “Best of Frank Black ’93-’03” is a true selection of Black’s eclectic hits. His unique vocals will entice listeners while his peerless lyrics might leave some scratching their heads and others proclaiming his genius.
