Carolyn Mark - Nothing is Free
- The bright-red background and multi-colored links of Carolyn Mark’s Web site are an indication of what her music is like. Like the vivid colors of the site, Mark’s album "Nothing is Free" is somewhat eccentric and attention-grabbing, but monotonous after long exposure.
During the first couple of songs Mark’s album seems fairly average. It isn’t spectacular, but there’s nothing terrible about it either. The melodies of the acoustic guitar and Mark’s country/bluegrass voice are a fitting combination, but they don’t create catchy songs overall. As the album continues, so does this pattern –- music and vocals that just seem “alright.”
By the time the album is half over, though, it has moved from mediocre to irksome. I’m not a fan of this style of music, but it seems like even a bluegrass lover would grow tired of Mark’s voice and the unexciting tunes. As the tracks progress, the album doesn’t seem to progress and change.
To have the most appreciation for "Nothing is Free," it would be best to listen to only a couple of songs and then move on to something else before the album starts to sound repetitious.
