Serena Ryder - Told You In A Whispered Song
- “Told You In Whispered Song” from Serena Ryder is a purely acoustic rock album. Its songs have somber messages that are conveyed by Ryder’s sad toned vocals. The temperament of each track is further communicated through the chronic change in her vocal range.
The title track has palpable acoustic guitar along with modest percussion as its base. The rhythm of the song is quite stoic as Ryder emotes about telling her lover how she feels, but the message doesn’t seem to come through: “I told you in a whispered song, one I cut my finger on. But it to me it does belong….Said you’d keep my secret as long as you could keep it locked away. There’s hell to pay its happenin'…Told so many lies…Come on lie on me.” It seems Ryder is declaring her sins to her man and asking for clemency, but it appears she isn’t being gifted that courtesy.
On “Hiding Place” there is more acoustic guitar, but it’s much slower than on the previous track. Listeners can hear each individual chord as it is being strummed, which shows Ryder’s savvy on the instrument. Ryder then croons about experiencing love for a short time with lyrics like, “Oh, if your radio didn’t work and your friends all ran away. Would you let yourself fall in love if only for one day?” Ryder is expounding on the hypothetical situation of being alone. What would you do? It’s up to the listener to decide.
“Brand New Love” has a country music vibe along with slightly more upbeat acoustic guitar and percussion play. Ryder sings about how she believes she can restore a certain someone’s broken heart with her warmth. “Read in basement books of old and dusky words. Stories told about somewhere else…We are young…Boy I can take your breath away. I’ll show you a brand new way. A brand new love. I can mend your wounded heart.” This song seems to be a statement by Ryder that she is capable of patching up this man with her affection, and the certitude with which she sings will make listeners speculate she can do so.
Serena Ryder’s “Told You In A Whispered Song” has tracks that have serious melodies, but the introspective and personal lyrics may speak to listeners, and they can use them in their own lives, knowing that Ryder has faced similar circumstances.
