54 Seconds - Postcards from California
- “Postcards from California” from 54 Seconds has a bevy of emotions flooding each and every song. The band’s lead vocalist has a very subdued voice that might tempt listeners to continue listening to the album, despite the message of love lost and the downtrodden beat of some songs.

“Blocking the Sun” has speedy guitar and drum work that vastly contrasts with the conservative timbre of the lead vocalist. He poses questions about why his sweetheart is the way she is with such lines as, “I asked why…I don’t know you had a sense of pride. I didn’t think it would ever be like this. There must be someone to blame.” It seems the male vocalist didn’t know this woman at all and is looking for someone to bear the onus for the extinction of their union.

On “Ben’s Letter” there is a whimsical build-up in the intro, and then it segues into talking about a missive that has been found. The vocalist croons about reading this note and its bottom line. “Now that you read Ben’s letter…Wish I could’ve stayed awhile longer. So now you’re on your own. Now we all come down.” It seems the letter is a “Dear John” one and now the recipient has to face the prospect of being alone.

“Dirty Little Secret” begins with effervescent acoustic guitar play as the vocalist muses about not hearing from his beloved and her not mentioning him when he isn’t in close proximity to her. “Seems the days are getting longer since you last called…You don’t talk about me even when I’m not there.” Listeners might glean from this song that the female in this relationship doesn’t feel the same as the male does; he just isn’t grasping her message.

54 Seconds’ “Postcards from California” has ultra personal songs about quenched flames of affection. The serious tone further carries the sad lyrics across to listeners. But the vocalist’s timbre has a quiet desperation that might appeal to listeners who have experienced similar romantic issues.
