Circa Survive - On Letting Go
- “On Letting Go,” by Circa Survive is an album by an alternative band that is filled with deeply personal tracks. The male vocalist’s timbre is profoundly strong and unmistakable. Each song’s message will signal to listeners that this band has their own identity and they wish to share it with listeners.

“Living Together” has visceral guitar play along with drumming that significantly pounds away in the background. The male vocalist’s voice is sweet yet somber as he emotes about cohabitating with another person and forgetting certain aspects of their relationship with lines like, “Away to set your mind…Erases things so how can we recall?” “In the Morning and Amazing...” has faster guitar and drum work. It’s even more upbeat than the previous track. Yet, the tone and melody of the song has a mystical rhythm to it. The male vocalist muses about not being able to complete an untroubled slumber with lines like, “This is wrong. This is wrong. I cannot sleep without the radio on and how can anyone…You’re with someone else.” It seems the male vocalist is singing about finding himself alone and is thinking about where his partner is.

“The Greatest Lie” has ripping guitar riffs that echo along with drum work. These two instruments form a simple rock feeling that has a frenzied pace to it. On this track, the male vocalist talks about a cozy space and questions what do while he is there. “This building smells so familiar…And in a daydream I imagine my house…So find me a place to begin.”

“The Difference Between Medicine and Poison Is In The Dose” is an introspective song about the disparity between things that are supposed to be good for you and how they actually make you feel. The male vocalist sings scornful lines like, “My mind’s not well…Just keep drinking water and you’ll be alright…Feels much better to know…Lay down but ask why…did you ever wish you were somebody else?” This song will hit very close to home for those who have experienced similar situations in their lives.

Circa Survive’s “On Letting Go” has tracks that speak of the feelings of the band, and the male vocalist emotes them masterfully. The band liberates all of their pent up emotions in song.
