Silverchair
Young Modern

Silverchair has been around for a long time. When they released their first demo in 1994, I was only seven years old. It seems as though the band hasn't lost any of their appeal through the years.

"Young Modern" certainly starts with a bang. The first track, "Young Modern Station," is full of fast-paced drums and guitars that support energetic vocals. Although the song isn't the catchiest on the album, it will definitely get toes tapping and heads nodding.

The next track, "Straight Lines," has a totally different sound. It slows down and incorporates a piano part. The sudden change of gears is great -? it shows the band's versatility and makes the album seem more dimensional.

"Young Modern" is full of surprises. You never know what sort of instrument or distortion is going to come up next. "If You Keep Losing Sleep" begins with high-pitched singing over a drum rhythm. It's not terrible, but I think it detracts the from the album; it's borderline annoying. Later, the song contains a snare drum pattern that sounds like something you'd hear at a concert band rehearsal.

Silverchair's album is engaging, but not exactly my taste. It's great that the band is still producing music after so many years, though, and it doesn't seem as though they've run out of ideas.
