Yo-Yo Ma - New Impossibilities
- Yo-Yo Ma’s latest album, “New Impossibilities,” is yet another addition to the famed cellists Silk Road project. The melodic tones and upbeat rhythms breathe life into classical music and might make those listeners who never cared for the genre realize its potential.

“Arabian Waltz” has whimsical percussion and woodwind instrumental work. It also has what sounds like a flute in the background as the classical tone picks up the pace and becomes very danceable. As the song progresses, the track’s rhythm comes to a crescendo, illustrating the artist’s sheer power. Ma’s ability on the cello makes this a song that listeners can tango to with a partner they wish to cast a spell on.

On “Galloping Horses” the title correctly fits the pace of the song. The quick cello work might make listeners envision the majestic animal dashing across a great plain. This is a song that could be heard in a western motion picture as a cowboy glides along on his faithful steed.

“Song of Eight Unruly Tipsy Poets” was composed by Chinese composer Zhou Long, who studied composition at Columbia University. Listeners can hear the guitar being meticulously strummed. Yet there is an ominous quality to this track, and it might be one heard in a horror or thriller movie as the predator tracks his unknowing victim. There is a whimsical feeling from time to time in the song and even an ancient Chinese tone, but the portentous rhythm does persist throughout the track.

“New Impossibilities,” from Yo-Yo Ma, gives an innovative take on classical music. The upbeat velocity and pitch of some of the songs might surprise listeners and make them true fans of this genre of music. In the end, listeners might discover “New Impossibilities,” courtesy of Yo-Yo Ma.
