Various Artists - Goin’ Home: A Tribute to Fats Domino
- “Goin’ Home: A Tribute to Fats Domino” combines illustrious artists from pop, rock, blues and even R & B to pay homage to one of the greatest rock and roll singers of all time. Pop idols like Tom Petty and even famous film scorer Randy Newman all lend their magical voices to Domino’s heralded classics, putting brand new spin on them so they are sure not to be forgotten by the next musical generation. The sales from this album will go toward the rebuilding of Domino’s home in Louisiana, as well as aid in raising much needed funds designated for instruments to be donated to New Orleans public school children.

On “Goin’ Home” blues mastermind B.B King struts his stuff on his guitar along with melodious organ work. His deep, emotional voice gets the message that Domino was trying to convey across even more convincingly. King successfully delivers to listeners that he can no longer take the abuse he is being dealt by his sweetheart. He is finally packing up his things and bidding her adieu. “Goin’ home tomorrow. Can’t stand your evil ways. Can’t stand your evil ways. Cuz when you’re around baby…I can’t go on…I can’t go on this way, I can’t go on this way.”

Piano man Elton John soulfully taps the ivories as he sings “Blueberry Hill.” His expressive voice echoes his adept piano playing and does this standard of Domino’s sheer justice. “I found my thrill, on Blueberry Hill. On Blueberry Hill. When I found you, the mood stood still, on Blueberry Hill…My dreams came true.” John’s meaningful vocals are accompanied by drum play that adds to the smooth quality of the song.

“Don’t Leave Me This Way” is performed by pianist Dr. John, whose real name is Malcolm John Rebennack Jr. He melds slow piano and leisurely guitar, both of which are guaranteed to get listeners’ blood pumping. Dr. John then brings a blues element to this track with the use of his deep voice, making the desperate notion of the song even clearer. “Woke up early this mornin’...Then I got on my knees all you could hear me say is. Don’t leave me this way. Don’t leave me this way. Don’t leave me this way. Don’t leave me this way…Tears runnin’ from my eyes and all I could do is cry. Don’t leave me this way. Don’t leave me this way. Don’t leave me this way. Don’t leave me this way, when your love is gone.” The entreating listeners hear in Dr. John’s voice make it crystal clear how much he doesn’t want to be alone and/or without his beloved.

The various artists included on “Goin’ Home: A Tribute to Fats Domino” do the famous singer proud as they put their own stamps on his most revered songs. With each artist lending their genre to a particular song, no matter what a listeners’ musical taste is they will not be bored by this album.
