Aaron Ross - Shapeshifter
- “Shapeshifter,” from Aaron Ross, is an acoustic rock fan's Utopia. It has a little bit of rock mixed together with folk melodies. Each song tells a tale, some of which might disincline listeners with their unpleasantness. But combine the infectious rhythms with Ross’s vocals, which sound eerily like the legendary Bob Dylan and listeners have a record that portrays the many facets of life, both good and bad.
“Pass The Peace Pipe” has slow acoustic guitar in the intro that has a folk-like touch to it. The pace of the guitar gets quicker as the song progresses and becomes more rhythmic in its tone. Ross goes on about the significances of life with lyrics like, “Sons and daughters of Cane…Their wisdom, she will help us all explain. The messages loud and clear burning down the sidewalk with a vengeance.”
On “Mama Lonely Wolf” the beat is more danceable and upbeat than on the previous track. Listeners will be able to hear the drum sticks being clanged together in between the drum throbbing and the adept acoustic guitar play. On this track, Ross again talks about getting through the challenges of existing. “The messages were simple…His eyes were made of stone. He told me to remind you, you will not have to fight this war alone.” Listeners can put their own definitions to what Ross means. His vocals linger at times during the song, which adds to its intensity, but doesn’t take away the buoyant flow of the track.
“Looking Glass Mass” begins with a country and folk stroke. Then its beat gets akin to a hoedown with its sprightly rhythm. Yet the point of the song is somewhat downtrodden. “The road is narrow…Old man winter, old man winter. Tells you no no no no no no no no.” Listeners can almost envision this cold, long winding path and traversing it.
Aaron Ross’s “Shapeshifter” has tracks that have lively tempos, but also songs that are labored and will make listeners contemplate the route their lives are going. Ross’ vocal compatibility to Dylan might also engage fans of his to give this artist a try and find they like what they hear.
