Aly & AJ - Insomniatic
- The latest record from the blond duo Aly & AJ, “Insomniatic,” has a troupe of vivacious tunes as well as somber romantic ones that might make listeners think about their own passionate encounters and how they turned out.
“Potential Breakup Song” has an electronica-like melody to it that is perfect to be played in listeners’ dance clubs. The duo harmonizes about how the romantic tides have turned, resulting in the end of a union. “It took too long. It took too long. It took too long for you to call back, and normally I would just forget that except for the fact it was my birthday, my stupid birthday…But obviously my armor was cracked…Don’t let me go…So you will know.”
The title track is a rocking track complete with quick guitar riffs in the intro compounded by striking drum work. The girls talk about how one feels when sleep alludes them. “Rolled over from last night’s dreams…Can’t break the habit…My current status…My train is off the track.” Listeners will hear the sisters harmonizing throughout the song, which adds to the song’s high-spirited melody.
“Silence” is a farewell from the more fast-paced tracks of before. This song opens with soft percussion that becomes sweet and hypnotic when the girls’ vocals come into play. Synthy drums accompany their vocals as they go on about a relationship that went awry and how sad they are at that outcome. “I don’t regret those years. You won’t be here. I guess I’ll keep. I guess you’ll keep every memory sadly we may never be…I need you more than you’ll ever know.” It seems Aly & AJ are thinking back to an alliance that is no longer and how much that upsets them.
“Insomniatic” by Aly & AJ is an album that will make listeners jump up and take notice of this harmonic twosome. Their active beats will infect listeners’ ears and make them want to dance whether they want to or not. Each song has its own unique tone and there are a variety of genres included such as rock, pop and even electronica. Regardless of a listeners’ musical flavor, they will be “Insomniatics” while listening to this record.
