Calvin Harris - I Created Disco
- “I Created Disco,” from Calvin Harris, is the Scottish artist’s debut album. He takes the mid-70s fad and crosses it with electronica music to form a sound that is incredibly danceable.

“Merry Making At My Place” starts off the album and has electronic sounds throughout the track. What sounds like a synthesizer changes the flow of the notes played along with rhythmic drum play. The noise co-mixes as Harris croons about the full-scale fun that takes place at his pad. He also sings about some of the more mischievous aspects of having people over with lines like, “Merry making…Come into my house. You’re invited into my house. Entering the back of my house. Welcoming you into my house. Come into my house. You’re invited into my house. Entering the back of my house. Welcoming you into my house. I’ve invited lots to my house…They take stuff inside of my house…I’ve seen it before lots of people out my front door, lots of people in my front door, trying to get into my house.”

On “This is Industry” Harris talks in the intro. It sounds like a briefing to listeners of what is to come in this song. He matter-of-factly utters lines like, “I am in the industry. You are in the industry. We are in the industry. This is the industry.” Then, metrical guitar and drum work come into the track along with resonant percussion play. Calvin then sings in a high-pitched timbre the repetitive line, “This is the industry.” Listeners might take this restatement as Harris’s clue to listeners that the market of music is one of cyclical actions that do not ever seem to refrain.

On the title track the electronica vibe is reinstated, but buzzing sounds are added to the mixture this time. The pace of this song combines the disco flow with an 80s beat to form a melody that is perfect for clubs with big lustrous orbs overhead. The thump of the song is also one listeners will find they want to clap endlessly to as they move their bodies to the merciless rhythm.

Calvin Harris’s “I Created Disco” is definitely a true statement. Each song portrays the infamous medium that was a musical phenomenon. Harris brings the trend back in a formidable way, and the album might convert a whole new crop of fans to the movement.
