Edgar Meyer - Best of Edgar Meyer
- “Best of Edgar Meyer,” from Edgar Meyer, is filled with tracks that exemplify this gifted instrumentalist’s prowess. He was awarded a MacArthur Award in 2002 for his instrumental efficiency, which listeners will no doubt hear on this record. Meyer’s expertise with his double bass will captivate listeners and draw them into each track’s hypnotic spell.

“Early Morning” has sprightly piano work that is sharply contrasted by Meyer’s deep double bass play. The rhythm of the song mimics how one feels when they awaken at a day’s first light. The warm feeling of sunlight gently coaxing them out of their slumber and urging them to begin yet another day fills the song. The soft tones provided by Meyer are the perfect start to the record.

“Uncommon Ritual” has an ominous, beginning as the strumming of the double bass can be heard with specificity. There are noticeable pauses in the beat, but then Meyer picks up the pace in a heartbeat and the mood of the song gets quite speedy.

“Pile-Up” is another song that depicts a common occurrence in everyday life. The rhythmic pitch of the song will remind listeners of the sound of many cars careening into each other to form a mangled bunch. While this is an unpleasant image, Meyer turns it into a pleasing one as he uses his double bass with total competence.

The “Best of Edgar Meyer” is truly an album that showcases the unsurpassed virtuoso that is Meyer. His unrivaled skill on his chosen instrument is never in question.
