On the Jimmy Reed Highway

On the Jimmy Reed Highway, from Omar Kent Dykes and Jimmie Vaughan, is a rare outing from Dykes minus his band The Howlers, but the edginess of the album is not diminished in the slightest. Dykes is accompanied by fellow Texan Jimmie Vaughan, and together they create blues tunes that will rock listeners to their innermost core.

"Baby What You Want Me to Do/Bright Lights Big City" begins with grooving guitar work along with rhythmic drum play. Dykes' then proceeds to growl as he goes on about a woman who has him going around and around in circles. "You got me runnin'/Yeah yeah yeah. You got me doin' what you want, baby. Why you wanna let go. We're goin' up. We're goin' down/Anyway you want it, let it roll."

On "Aw Shucks, Hush Your Mouth" Dykes howls about how a certain lady has bowled him over. "Aw shucks, hush your mouth. Baby, you knockin' me out. You're my kind of woman. You know what it's all about."

"You Upset My Mind" has soulful drum play. Dykes gruffs right along with wicked guitar work and the blowing of the harmonica. The skillful harmonica play makes this song a true blues refrain. Dykes expounds on how he is besotted by a particular woman, but he is attempting to stop his constant weeping due to this love. "I'm in love with you baby, tryin' to keep from cryin'. I'm in love with you baby. Tryin' to keep from cryin', You know I love you baby/Tell me if you love me. Let me know in time. Now tell me if you love me. Let me know in time."

Omar Kent Dykes and Jimmie Vaughan's "On the Jimmy Reed Highway" is a blues album that gets right to the guts of the genre and delivers raunchy sounding tracks. The pairing of two such accomplished artists is truly a match made in musical heaven.
