Critical Bill - Downtown the World
- “Downtown the World,” from Critical Bill, has tracks that fuse hip-hop and rock into one rousing parade of songs. DJ Tom Sawyer, Mark “C-Bass” Causley on drums, Powerdisc on vocals, Mike Scott on guitar and Phil Thacker on bass encompass a sound that blends introspective lyrics with solid instrumentation.
The title track has exacting guitar play in the intro along with pulsating drum work that is sure to get listeners’ attention. Powerdisc throbs as he goes on about getting to the substance of the world that spins around and around. “It’s time to jet…Next to explode…Downtown, downtown, downtown the world.”
On “Here I Am” the guitar and bass work have a cool and echoing vibe to them. In the intro, the inclusive tone of the song starts out smooth and relaxed, which is a drastic contrast from the prior songs. The band softly begins to explain how a certain lady pleaded for a man to come and safeguard her. Then they use metaphors to explain how they are just right for the job. “You said you needed a knight in shining armor. No harm will come to you when I’m with you…All your fantasies and fairy tales come true….For I will be there for what your seeking. For I will be there when you need me…And I told you I’d be there for you. Here I am. Here I am.” As the song continues, the rhythm gets a tad more intense, but the vocalist persists in his mission to show his woman that no matter what, she can always count on him.
“Shouting” has percussion that sporadically shows up throughout the intro along with guitar work that will have listeners’ heads banging even if they are not cognizant of it. There are also electronic sounds that make their way into the track ever so slightly as the vocalist goes on about a looming doom. “I bring the prophecy…This is a just a test, I repeat, just a test. Why waste your breath...You can call me crazy.” The passion with which the vocalist pounds out each line could startle or invigorate listeners.
Critical Bill’s “Downtown the World” is an album that blends two genres into one, making a unique sound. The energetic rhythms of each song will unmistakably grab listeners and make them want to take a trip “Downtown the World” right alongside Critical Bill.
