Daisy Hicks - Incredible
- “Incredible,” from Daisy Hicks, is a pop album with some country vibes mixed in. Hicks is an English-born Australian singer/songwriter who comes from a long line of renowned musicians. Her father is a distinguished jazz drummer, her cousin is famed guitarist Chris Rea, and her uncle is noteworthy opera singer and theater promoter, Tano Rea. Classically trained in Australia, Hicks brings her expressive and gentle vocals to listeners as she sings about the joys of being alive and the remorse that can come from being in love.
“Heartbreak Hill” has Hicks beginning the album singing a tale of romantic misfortune. The guitar work has a smooth yet catchy tone to it as she reminisces about a love she once held dear and though it seems her partner has moved on, Hicks cannot seem to do the same. Soft piano play accompanies Hicks as she sings bittersweet lyrics. “Standin’ here up on heartbreak hill. Days are dark, the nights so still. Lookin’ back on the love we made…Standin’ there with your head held high…It’s in the past for you.”
On “If I Can’t Make It” the guitar play has a quicker rhythm, as does the drum work as Hicks sweetly harmonizes about a premonition she has of not being able to forge a lasting relationship. “I can see in your eyes as you look the other way. I think love is starting to fade…Give it one more chance to try again. If I can’t make it with you baby. I don’t want to make it all. If I can’t spend my life with you baby. I really don’t wanna know.” On this song, the upbeat pace might distract listeners from Hicks’s message.
“Stay” slows things down as Hicks soulfully begs, with tender piano accompaniment, for her lover not to abandon her. “Forever, that’s what you promised me darlin’…I gave you my love so completely. I was counting on you. Time isn’t healing. I can’t move on. The love that we had was too strong. So why don’t you stay stay stay with me baby. Forever yes and ever. Why don’t you stay stay stay with me darling…That’s all I thought would have mattered…I gave you my heart but it shattered.” Listeners will truly feel the warm emotions that Hicks conveys.
Daisy Hicks’s record, “Incredible,” has tracks that will mend the souls of those who have been broken by love. Hicks’s cool and sometimes sensual voice also lets listeners forget, at least for a little while, their troubles and attempt to move on.
