Chip Taylor - Live from the Ruhr Triennale
- Chip Taylor’s “Live from the Ruhr Triennale” is a live country album that showcases his talent, and on several tracks, the audience exhibits their appreciation for his musical anecdotes. At the age of eight, this future songwriter would beg his parents to let him stay up late to listen to a country radio station that filtered from West Virginia, thus his country roots run deep despite his New York birthplace. The instrumentation is precise and the melodies are infectious as Taylor gives the crowd a sample of tried and true country life.
On “Laredo” Taylor introduces the song as one that was on his 2006 album with Carrie Rodriguez entitled, “The Trouble with Humans.” Taylor sings a mixture of soulful and country backed up by guitar work in the intro that fades in and out, but gets more pronounced as the song progresses. Taylor and Rodriguez sing, “Roses are red baby. That’s what he said. Lily white lightning, it went straight to your head. There’s blood on your hands, blood on your shoes. Don’t talk to me about issues, that’s just plain abuse. Inches away, don’t ya know. Inches away, don’t ya know.”
With “Long Black Veil” there is a macabre vibe that emanates as Taylor weaves a tale of suspicion and murder. Taylor’s muted vocals as he sings about how he is a suspect in a local killing heighten the sinister nature of the song. “10 years ago on a cold, quiet night, was someone killed…And there were a few at the scene and they all agreed that the slayer who ran looked a lot like me.”
“Live from the Ruhr Triennale,” by Chip Taylor, tells stories of hardship and intrigue. Taylor’s emotive vocals will stir land captivate listeners.
