Maria Sangiolo - Under the Mystic Sea
- “Under the Mystic Sea,” from Maria Sangiolo, is an album that will beckon children and families alike with its utter simplicity. Sangiolo was born and raised in Massachusetts and her soprano voice has a candid rhythm to it. After being formally trained in violin, she discovered her singing talent, and the rest is history. Her sprightly voice emotes sanguine lyrics that are sure to make listeners of all ages smile with glee.
“Giggly Girl” begins with the sound of children snickering. Harmonica and guitar work accompany Sangiolo as she goes on about wanting to be that carefree girl of her youth. “I wanna be a giggly girl, a giggly girl again. I wanna be a giggly girl, a giggly girl again. Giggly girls like to stay up late, they dance to the hip hop beat…Flashlight beneath the sheets.”
With “Mermaid Molly” Sangiolo paints a picture for listeners of a mystical underwater creature who has lofty ambitions. "Mermaid Molly swam along the sunny shore one day. Watchin’ all the children escape the day away. She wanted to be cool like them…She wanted to wear roller skates. She had fins instead of feet. Silly Mermaid Molly, you can do so many things. You can find a buried treasure, you can swim like you have wings…Hide and seek with a snail. You may never roller skate with your tail.” Sangiolo tells a tale of someone who does not give up on her dreams even though she is impeded by her body.
On “Celia Says” there are sweet guitar licks and a rosy vibe. Sangiolo sings about a woman who is trying to give hope to all that they are not alone in the world. “Celia was a wise old gal…Swam across the sea…Because Celia says we all sail the sea together. Sister Celia says no one truly swims alone.” Some listeners see this song as having a biblical touch. Sangiolo’s vocals are soothing and relaxing.
Maria Sangiolo’s “Under the Mystic Sea” is filled with upbeat and expressive songs that will fill listeners with joy and perhaps transport them to a sphere where they can let their imaginations roam free.
