Christmas with Carnie

Ever since I was about 12-13 years old, my favorite song has always been "The Reflex" by Duran Duran. Yes/"The Reflex." Every time I hear it, it reminds me of the Christmas Day my father and I hit the road in his 76 lime green and white El Camino, en route to my grandmothers house. I don't remember much else about that day, other than every little radio station we came across in our three hour drive was playing that song. I must have heard "so why-y-y-y-y-y don't you use it?" about 20 times that day. Well, Simon LeBon, I hate to inform you, but your number one spot is in jeopardy. One listen to the brand new "Christmas with Carnie" CD by Beach Boy Brian Wilsons' daughter Carnie Wilson, and I have a new favorite yuletide carol. "Merry Christmas Darling" has to be one of the sweetest holiday tunes I've ever heard. You can close your eyes and practically hear the snowflakes falling and the cookies baking. "Christmas with Carnie" finds the one time member of Wilson Phillips getting you in the holiday mood with 12 traditional, light-hearted songs, none of which will get in the way of your gay apparel.

All songs here carry the same cheerful mood -- which works fine with such standards like the bouncy "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" and the playful "Sleigh Ride." But classics like the sultry "Santa Baby" come off cheesy when put to such whimsical music. The whole tone of the song changes when the lyrics Eartha Kitt made famous (come and trim my Christmas tree) actually mean/well/come and trim my Christmas tree.

Even her rendition of "Blue Christmas" comes off more powder than melancholy blue.

On the upside, the cheeriness works on tunes like the scenic "White Christmas" and the aforementioned "Merry Christmas, Darling," where she sings,"Holidays are joyful/There's always something new/but everyday is holiday/when I'm near to you."

Sounds like a brand new sweater and socks to me.

Overall, "Christmas with Carnie" is a safe, family-friendly,let's get together and make some figgy pudding type of CD that is sure to become background music on Christmas morning.
