A Step Behind - This Is What We've Become
- This five song EP from the punk band hailing from Pearland, Texas, finds the group sticking to the punk band format -- emotional, sometimes indecipherable lyrics, catchy hooks and simple song structure, which is good, I guess, if you’re not looking for any originality in your music. If you’re looking to be challenged while you listen, stay away from this release.
Not that it’s a bad record…it’s just not a good record. There’s nothing that separates them from anyone else. Granted, there’s not a whole lot to judge here, seeing how it is only five songs deep, but around the third track, you get the feeling that you’ve heard it all before. You’ll feel a constant sense of Déjà vu trying to get into this disc.
The one bright spot is “Truth Be Told,” the best song on the offering, with lyrics such as “Broken trust is a helluva resume’/running low on excuses and things to say/I don’t know who you are/Don’t lie, is there something you’re hiding from/Far-fetched like the stories you’re rattling on/I don’t know who you are.” It’s unfortunate that there aren’t many moments like this.
Upon it’s release the group's debut album, “Since We Can’t Have Forever,” received very high marks and praise for the band's energetic stage shows and connection with their fans, two things that you really can’t get a feel for on record. I hate to think that “This Is What We’ve Become” means that they’ve become what this record sounds like: another generic punk band.
