Corey Harris - Zion Crossroads
- “Zion Crossroads,” from Corey Harris, is the consummation of the artist’s migration through Africa for the past decade. The album is infused with all of the influences he picked up along the way, which include soul, blues and even reggae.
On “Ark of the Covenant” Harris sings about religion with a soul and reggae twist. Along with Harris’s lively vocals there is bass work as Harris emotes spiritual lyrics such as, “The ark of the covenant…So the scriptures say…Two to pass the test. Tougher than the rest. Oh yeah.”
“No Peace for the Wicked” has euphonic drum play with a catchy rhythmic beat. Yet, the message of the song is a social commentary by Harris that there is no harmony for those who abuse others. “No peace for the wicked. No matter where they go…The judgment…Crumble down to the ground. No peace for the wicked.”
With “In the Morning” there is a groovy vibe, as Harris is accompanied by smooth guitar work highlighted by specific notes. As the melody of the song progresses, light piano play can be heard, which gives the track a vivacious bend. On this track, Harris gives listeners an upbeat feeling as he describes his emotions at the birth of a new day. “When I get up early in the morning, meet a brand new day. I rise up…High up from the darkness…Rise up early with the sunshine.”
Corey Harris’s “Zion Crossroads” has sprightly instrumentation with lyrics that speak about the ills of our culture. Harris’s voice evokes a combination of pain at civilization’s troubles and a certain felicity at expressing his deepest thoughts. For listeners who enjoy music that makes them contemplate the world around them, traversing the “Zion Crossroads,” is right up their alley.
