Ashia - Pay To Be Loved
- The debut release from Ashia Grzesik, a classically trained vocalist and cello player, is an eclectic mix of genres that makes it difficult to classify. Blues, classical and jazz are all present on this provocative album, which you could imagine hearing at a coffee shop (maybe not Starbucks, but the hip one around the corner that makes you a little self conscious every time you go in because you aren’t an art student).
Bold for a first album, each song is composed and performed exclusively by Ashia using only her cello and her voice. With vocal acrobatics reminiscent of Regina Spektor or Tori Amos, Ashia’s lyrics are sophisticated and jump back and forth between pretty and gritty as the album progresses. Unfortunately, to really appreciate the album one must sit and concentrate in order to catch subtleties. This album is by no means driving music or even background music; if you’re looking to listen to something truly alternative and avant-garde, give "Pay to Be Loved" a try.
Stand out tracks: "Pay to Be Loved" and "Divine Killer."
