Jon Abel - Back to You
- The iTunes music store has Jon Abel’s album “Back to You” listed under “Rock” but its lyrics, and some song titles such as “There Is None Like You (Sovereign Lord),” quickly reveal that “Back to You” belongs in the Christianity category, or at least in some genre cross-listing like Christian rock. Abel’s MySpace page no doubt best categorizes his music as “Christian/Acoustic/Pop.” In fact, when I first began listening to the album without knowing the song titles beforehand, the first track, “Running After Me,” initially sounded to me like it was going to be a standard pop song before the lyrics with their religious undertones came in.
“Back to You” is a good album to listen to if you like some spirituality with your pop/rock music. Even if you’re wary of Christian music, Abel’s vocals are easy to listen to. His voice has a sort of rough, masculine, down-to-earth quality to it that counterbalances the reaching-to-the-heavens message of his songs, and the music is pleasant to the ears as well.
