Fugazi - The Argument
- It is quite a feat for a band to go their entire career without making a bad album; furthermore, it’s even more impressive when a band bows out after releasing quite possibly their best album. Fugazi may have done just that with the release of The Argument, which expands their incomparable sound even further. The Argument is another testament to their constantly evolving sound and ability to challenge their audience with every new effort.
The arrangements on The Argument are absolutely stunning, as each song always seems to have some type of surprise; whether it’s the airy and ambient bridge in “Epic Problem” or the acoustic guitar breakdown in “Nightshop.” There’s so much going on in each song that it would be a disservice to listen to it through something other than a pair of headphones; there are so many inconspicuous layers in every song that go relatively unnoticed through regular speakers.
It’s also quite easy to get lost in the immersive and textured guitar playing; Guy Picciotto and Ian MacKaye are always playing two completely different riffs throughout every song. Bassist Joe Lally and drummer Brendan Canty provide an excellent backdrop for the guitar playing with their groovy rhythms and subtle fills. However, they never seem to show each other up as each individual instrument distinguishes itself, yet blends seamlessly into each song.
“Strangelight” is perhaps the most memorable song on the album; the vocal melody is beautiful while at the same time, haunting. The ending is a direct contrast with the soft, ambient introduction, as an eerie guitar riff in the last few measures gains momentum and builds up to an ominous conclusion.
Fugazi may have never officially called it quits, but there doesn’t seem to be any vestige of them getting back together, seeing as how they are all busy with solo projects. But at least they bowed out on a high note with The Argument, arguably their finest album.
