Salvador Santana Band - SSB
- “We all come together to enjoy this music,” proclaim the opening lyrics on “Oh Yea Yeah,” the first track of the Salvador Santana Band’s album, SSB. “Enjoy this music” is certainly something you can do with this group’s debut album. The tracks on SSB combine various music genres including funk, hip-hop, Latin and rock.
Salvador is the son of multiple Grammy-winning artist Carlos Santana (featured on the fifth track, “Me & U”), but his musical heritage does not stop there. Salvador’s maternal grandfather was Saunders King, described on the Salvador Santana Band’s MySpace page as an “African-American blues pioneer, tenor and guitar legend,” and his paternal grandfather is Jose Santana, a “celebrated violinist and mariachi bandleader.” According to Salvador, the songs he creates with the band are “a mix of all my favorite music, the best of what’s impacted my life, all coming together in a new genre.” That love for the music and the band’s passion comes through in the lively songs, though some of the lyrics that assert how good the music is can also seem arrogant.
Currently, the Salvador Santana Band is composed of Santana on keyboards and vocals, Emerson Cardenas doing bass, Woody Aplanalp on guitar and vocals, Tony Austin playing drums, Quincy McCaray on vocals and back up keyboard and former Ozomatli player Jose "Crunchy" Espinosa on sax, flute, percussion and vocals.
