Matthew Ryan - Matthew Ryan Vs. The Silver State
- Matthew Ryan’s latest album is called Matthew Ryan Vs. The Silver State (MRVSS for short). Like the title hints, the album’s songs focus on people fighting against something, in this case, the setbacks and difficulties life throws at you. Yet the title also carries with it a legal connotation that could imply fighting for something as well. In this year’s March/April issue of HARP magazine, Ryan in fact said that MRVSS “is about fighting for idealism and romanticism and love and dreams. [The characters] are fighting to define their own futures.” Ryan, who comes from a working-class background himself and says that the people he writes about are “the sons and daughters of [Bruce] Springsteen’s characters,” sings with low, rough vocals well-suited to his album’s moody songs. Unfortunately, the raw quality of his vocals also makes it difficult to distinguish everything he is singing in his lyrics. Hopefully, Ryan’s lyrics will be included in a booklet for the CD when Matthew Ryan Vs. The Silver State is released on April 1.
