A. A. Bondy - American Hearts
- American Hearts, A. A. Bondy’s solo debut album, sounds like a mix of folk and blues. Bondy sings about topics like death, sex and calamity in quiet, sorrowful tones. Guitar and harmonica figure heavily in the music. Bondy’s songs are also filled with Biblical imagery or references, from the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse in the opening number, “How Will You Meet Your End?” to the mention of Christ in the title track’s lyrics: “And if your God makes war / Then he’s no God I know / ‘Cause Christ would not send boys to die.” Besides his war protest, Bondy also seemingly has a message of tolerance on the song, “American Hearts.” He sings, “And don’t tread on me / For I am your brother / I was born with an American heart / And don’t tread on her / For she is your sister / She was born with an American heart.” On the second track, “There’s a Reason,” the slow love song that plays presents a refreshing musical change in atmosphere from some of the sadder songs on the album. Lyrically, Bondy also raises the listener’s hopes with “There’s a Reason,” by offering some hopes of his own. Near the end of the song, he sings, “May tomorrow / The land be anew / May every bird sing unto you / That’s the reason / That’s the reason / That the love that’s tearin’ you down / Is the love that will turn you around.”
