David Bavas - Songs Of Love, Death and Trains
- David Bavas grew up in a small Pennsylvanian town. He now resides in Seattle, Washington. The singer/songwriter released his second album, Songs of Love, Death and Trains, in September of 2007. He was backed up on the CD by the band, The Down Comforters.
There is no question that David Bavas is talented. He has a deep voice that has enough wear to it that the listener is intrigued to listen to his pain. He also has an interesting way with words. But the dark folk music makes absolutely everything sound so depressing. Whether it is singing about “Julia,” who has left him alone, or a “No Lonesome Tune” about wanting to reunite with a girl, everything just gets the listener a little down.
The songs are good, but only in small doses, because after listening to the whole CD, I’m not sure anyone will be able to smile. The only song that sounds slightly upbeat is “Raindrops,” and that song made me cringe the first time I heard it. The music led me to believe I was about to hear a kiddie tune. I thought I was about to learn how to count. And while the tune to the song isn’t depressing, the lyrics definitely don’t uplift.
Depressing songs can be good. I really do enjoy “Willow Tree,” which has a Dylan feel to it. I also liked “Heaven and Hell,” which was an openly lonely song. However, even though some of the songs are good, if you aren’t a folk music fan and are not in the mood to listen to music that may just depress you, I’d pass on this CD. Hopefully, Bavas will find something that will make him sing a happy tune on his next CD.
However, if you don’t trust me, the CD is available for download at Amazon or iTunes; that way you can download a few songs first to test it out.
