Jody Gnant - Pivot
- Jody Gnant’s new album Pivot lets listeners hear her soulful mezzo-soprano voice for the first time since Gnant’s work on the Treasure Quest soundtrack album.

Gnant also plays piano on Pivot, being accompanied by a band of skillful musicians: brothers Adrian Goldenthal and Julian Goldenthal on bass and drums, respectively, and Kristopher Hill on guitar.

The 10 tracks on Pivot are generally pleasant to hear, particularly the closing track “Great Day,” which begins with the soft tinkling of Gnant’s piano playing and steadily has her vocals increase in strength as the song progresses. “Me Who Changed,” the second track, is also interesting to hear for the Latin flamenco rhythms of the song’s music. The fifth track, “Lavandaria Sucia,” cleverly uses the rhythmic sound of a coin-operated laundry machine to punctuate the end of the song, which is about doing laundry at a “25 cent wash.” The ballad “Over” starts off with the fairy tale words “Once upon a time” but quickly turns into a tale without a happy ending.

Such unexpected twists—or turns—make Pivot an album that is worth a listen or two.
