Eric Avery - Help Wanted
- Help Wanted is the debut solo album of Eric Avery, co-founder and bassist of Jane’s Addiction. The songs on Avery’s solo CD primarily sound dark, as they deal with disillusionment, alienation and isolation. A glance at the track listings, which include titles like “Song in the Silence,” “Sun’s Gone,” and the play-on-words “All Remote and No Control,” reinforces those themes, as do the album’s lyrics. On “Revolution,” for example, the lyrics include “I get sick, I get well / But am I ever better, I can never tell,” and “. . . in one big bomb all the good men on earth went away.” Avery’s lyrics are not entirely bleak, however, and a bit of hope can even be introduced in the same song, as it is on “Revolution.” Hopeful lyrics are also evident in “Maybe,” as a female vocalist and Avery alternate on singing the lines, “We’re still alive / I hear your kind words / And that’s some kind of miracle.” The electronica and other sound effects, like a foreign language being spoken, help add to the mood the album creates as well.
