Murray Perahia - Bach: Partitas Nos. 2-4
- Murray Perahia, an accomplished concert pianist and conductor, triumphantly returns to the world of performance after a three year hiatus. A New York City native, Perahia was the recipient of the 2003 Grammy award for Best Instrumentalist Solo Performance and two Gramophone awards for Best Instrumental Recordings.
A leading expert on Bach, Perahia’s interpretation of Bach’s Partitas two through four is an event to which the classical music world should sit up and take notice.
Bach’s Partitas, originally referred to as the “German Suite,” are a set of six suites. The six movements of each suite may vary as some suites may have a Scherzo rather than a Menuett. Traditionally, however, a suite has an Allemande, an energetic dance in triple meter, a Sarabande, a slow, dignified dance in triple meter, and a Gigue, a fairly fast jig.
Perahia’s interpretation of Bach’s Partitas is a study on contrasts: his austere notes are tempered by his soft, almost gentle application of the pedal, and his playing is truly sincere. Although Perahia does not ornament the pieces as frequently as other classical pianists would, his simple, thought-out playing only further expresses the emotional fortitude of his interpretation.
While Perahia’s playing is consistently clean and his ability to smoothly bring out each voice in turn is noteworthy, he excels in his solemn playing of the Sarabandes, particularly in Partita No. 2 in C minor.
Perahia’s playing Partitas 2, 3, & 4 provide a successful re-entry into the world of classical music, and Perahia is clearly able to present a polished, dedicated take on some of Bach’s greatest works.
