M83 - Saturdays=Youth
- From its title to the group of teenagers pictured on its cover, M83’s album, Saturdays=Youth, is all about what it felt like to be young—or to be specific, what it felt like to be young in the ‘80s. Anthony Gonzales, who is M83, wanted the album to evoke what it felt like to be a teenager “mixed with this period,” the 1980s, when he was growing up himself. While most of us may not want to relive our teen years, Gonzales says on his MySpace page, “I loved being a teenager. That’s when I discovered music and started to take drugs and party with my friends.” Don’t expect upbeat, cheerful songs here, though. The fourth track, “Graveyard Girl,” has guest vocalist Morgan Kibby, from L.A.-based band “The Romanovs,” relate the thoughts of a goth girl, as follows: “The cemetery is my home, I want to be a part of it, invisible even to the night […] I'm 15 years old and I feel it's already too late to live. Don't you?” The rest of Saturdays=Youth is similarly not very lighthearted in its mood or tone, but it has some more up-tempo moments, like with the drums and electronica synths on “Kim & Jessie.” At other times, the CD makes for nice mellow music, as with the piano on “Too Late.”
