KJ Denhert - Lucky Seven
- In her seventh album, Lucky Seven, KJ Denhert, popular and respected urban folk and jazz musician, solidifies her reputation in the music world. Her soulful lyrics and excellent melodies are consistently taken to a new level with impeccable jazz accompaniment.
Denhert’s band, which includes Sheryl Bailey on guitar, Peter Vitalone on keys, Giovanni Arencibia on percussion, Octavio Kotan on guitar, Ray Levier and Sue Hadjopoulos on drums and Mamadou Ba on bass, are first-rate jazz musicians. With her band and Denhert’s vocal and guitar skills, Lucky Seven cannot be anything but a hit.
The title track, “Lucky Seven,” has a smooth and easy groove, one enhanced by excellent piano and guitar improvisations. Denhert’s whiskey-drenched voice gives “Lucky Seven” a rich, almost earthy quality.
Two stand out tracks on this album are “Beautiful,” a guitar-dominated, soulfully mellow ballad that gently embraces a simple melody, and “Little Problems,” an up-tempo, funk-like track with a effortless and uncomplicated groove that easily captures the listener. Between these two tracks, each at the ends of the musical spectrum of groove and mood, Lucky Seven is memorable.
An album packed with soul, folk, and a hint of funk, Lucky Seven is a veritable success. With tributes to classics (“Somewhere Over the Rainbow”) and original compositions (“What’s My Name 1,” What’s My Name 2,” “What’s My Name 3”), Lucky Seven features the musical prowess of KJ Denhert and her exceptional band.
