Jeff Healey - Mess of Blues
- Mess of Blues verifies that Jeff Healey plays the blues very well. What is truly amazing is that he plays the guitar so perfectly, so effortlessly that he makes it seem easy enough that anyone could play, when he is blind. Also, this album was released just a week after his passing on March 2 at the age of 41, earlier this year, after fighting a lifelong battle with cancer. He really feels the blues and that is why he plays it so well, since it truly comes from within him.
The album consists of two songs recorded live from a show in London and two from his Roadhouse, the rest was recorded in a studio. There are many well done covers on Mess, which were originally recorded by artists such as Jerry Lee Lewis, Neil Young, and Rosemary Clooney. The lyrics are open and simple; the melodies are more complex. The piano and guitar are definitely the stars of this album having great solos, which can go from high to low and back, effortlessly. Since many of the songs are a few decades old, there is that “oldie” feeling to all of them, but there is also something that makes them feel a bit current. “I’m Torn Down” is a great opener, sort of punching the listener(s) in the ear right away. “How Blue Can You Get?” is long but not boring and is cool because it feels like you’re listening to a jam session seeing where the song will go instead of sticking with a formula for a song. The album is very entertaining and blues fans will definitely enjoy it.
