Half Hours With The lower Creatures

With the breathy depth of Annie Lennox, Rachel Taylor Brown has some very intriguing moments on her newest album, Half Hours With The Lower Creatures.

Brown certainly doesn't suffer from a lack of enthusiasm, as she jumps all over the place on this album, musically speaking. Her style varies, but within a limit. She sticks to an alternative beat - if you're looking for a good pop rock album, this is not it. If you're looking for a breezy, breathy summer album, then this would not be a bad choice.

Brown has a nice voice; however, some of the songs on the album are better suited for her voice than others. For example, the slow ballad "Another Dead Solider in Fallujah" is not as enjoyable as her quicker-paced and frankly, moving, "Abraham and Isaac" and "You're Alright Sorla One."

Brown's album definitely has elements of the experimental, so listeners looking for something quirky and out of the mainstream will be assured to find something new within the cover of this album. Brown's voice is similar to those of Lennox and of A Fine Frenzy. She has the pipes -- it is just a matter of whether she will cross into the mainstream with them soon.
