Newton Faulkner - Hand Built by Robots
- It's always nice to be pleasantly surprised by a new name. I was not familiar with Newton Faulkner before listening to his new album, Hand Built by Robots. And the surprise is -- it's a very enjoyable collection! Faulkner is often accompanied by his acoustic guitar in many of the CD's tracks, with a nice folksy feeling. His songs are well balanced and calming, but also different enough from one another, though most are folk/pop/easy listening. "To the Light," "Aging Superhero," "I Need Something," and "Dream Catch Me" are especially notable tracks, though (as is not often the case) all of the tracks are worth listening to. "Feel Like Home" is especially reminiscent of Johnson, which no doubt will please new listeners. "Gone in the Morning" is similar to Sting and the Police, in their "Message in a Bottle" heyday. The album experiments with various styles, mainly folk, but even tastes of India and the Caribbean are thrown in for fun and good measure. Faulkner's style and voice are similar to Jack Johnson, John Mayer and Donovan Frankenreiter. He fits comfortably into the niche established by the aforementioned well known names, yet succeeds at still carving out his own special base. Best of luck to him in continuing to build a fan base.
