Aychee - Hot Cakes
- Aychee, which includes emcees S.A.G. and Rusty Mack, presents a self-made crunk album, one that catches a few good grooves. However, Hot Cakes, their debut album, is a mixed bag of good and bad beats and rhymes. Aychee, a relatively new union, seems to still be finding their musical foundation. Though they remain true to the hip-hop inspired crunk style and their rapping is good, Aychee’s tracks tend to drag.

Aychee opens Hot Cakes with the title track, “Hot Cakes.” Unfortunately, “Hot Cakes” falls slightly flat. With its sparse sound and dragging tempo, “Hot Cakes” just doesn’t live up to its hip-hop ancestry.

However, Aychee does find some good beats, particularly with “Shenanigans,” an up tempo, rhythmically-catchy tribute to partying and mischief. “Candy Flippin’,” a synthesizer-dominated track, also stands out, though it could use cleverer beats.

For a debut album, Hot Cakes isn’t bad, but it isn’t good, either. Despite their efforts, Aychee is just missing that musical “je ne sais quoi.” With better beats and better rhymes, Hot Cakes could be a great album. Though their rapping is consistently great, it is not enough to make Hot Cakes a true hit.
