Patmore Lewis - Rillito River Project
- Composer and violinist Patmore Lewis presents Rillito River Project, a new age-infused classical collection of original and traditional classical pieces. The combination of the new and the old, the familiar and the exotic, makes Rillito River Project both a provocative and outstanding album, one that easily shows Lewis’s musical talents.
Lewis opens Rillito River Project with “Elemental Flow.” “Elemental Flow” is, in essence, the track around which the rest of the album flows. With its hints of world influences and strikingly poignant dissonances, “Elemental Flow” is a study in emotional and musical creativity. Though the dissonance between the violin and the piano is, at times, jarring, the warring between the two instruments adds to the overall complexity of the piece. “Elemental Flow,” with its layers of sound, stands out on this album and has, by far, the most impact of any other track on this album. “Elemental Flow” is memorable.
Lewis’s interpretations of other classical compositions is spot-on, particularly his playing of Strauss’s “Sonata in E Flat Major for Violin and Piano.” In contrast to “Elemental Flow,” Lewis’s playing is lighter, more delicate, though not without the passion that inevitably accompanies a Strauss piece. More importantly, Lewis’s playing of both “Elemental Flow” and more classical pieces like the Strauss “Sonata” showcases his musical abilities: Lewis is undoubtedly a talented musician, one who finds a home in both classical and contemporary genres.
Rillito River Project, an emotionally and musically diverse album, is brilliant, and it easily highlights Lewis’s playing and composing abilities. There are virtually no weaknesses, and Lewis should be commended for his outstanding interpretations of classical works.
