MercyMe - iTunes Originals/All That Is Within Me
- MercyMe's album is certainly something different. Utilizing the brilliant technology available today, MercyMe synthesized this collection by combining a number of songs from their "All That Is Within Me" tour, with some new songs; this album was released via iTunes. As such, the band devotes plenty of the 25 tracks to just speaking to viewers and explaining their feelings on specific songs and environments. At first I didn't know if that would work. In the beginning, it's surprising to hear silence, and then a voice introducing the band. Shortly after, one member of the band begins to describe the origin of the Christian rock band, and how everything gelled together. It does get repetitive after a while. However, if you are interested in more of a studio session with a band, where there are plenty of breaks in-between the actual music, then you will like this new venture.
A rock/country band, MercyMe is also dedicated to spreading the gospel of solid Christian music. Hardly alone, this band joins the ranks of such prominent Christian bands as LifeHouse. The band members' voices are rich and full, and there is plenty of palpable energy coming from this album. The instrumentals are sometimes quite uplifting. Otherwise, a number of the songs sound like generic country music, which isn't a bad thing at all, but just isn't something surprising and new. It's nice for what it is, which is a novel new effort in an expanding technological frontier. There is a lot of speaking, though, so if you are looking for only songs, then it would probably be a better idea to buy one of the band's older CDs.
