Damien Dempsey - The Rocky Road
- If Ireland had a heart that could sing, Damien Dempsey – who looks nothing like McDreamy – would be catapulting voice that can be heard. The Rocky Road album is embroidered with the Irish heritage and nothing short of a true homage to the Irish homeland. You can smell the whiskey that oozes out as the music plays.

It’s a very thick, heavy Irish stressing on each track, for as the CD progresses it’s almost getting to a point of being nauseating. The album is very slow moving. It almost acts as a movie soundtrack where every song seems like it would play over a big winding aerial shot encompassing the actors below on a rocky cliff.

The Rocky Road has a very cinematic appeal to it, but just seems like a chore to make it through. During some gaps, there’s just pure singing with no music. Just silence and you hear Dempsey’s thick accent and you wonder what’s going on. I suppose if you’re of Irish descent and very prideful of where you come from, then this is the album for you. But for the rest of us, it concentrates too heavily on its culture, which might not appeal to everyone.

It’s a trek to get through—a long uphill battle so to speak. There’s definitely talent in Dempsey, but he’s narrowing his audience. Not everyone is going to gravitate towards his music. Musicians make music as a form of expression first and foremost – not for the money. I’m not saying he should compromise who he is, but he isn’t getting my ears to listen to his tracks.
