Sermon on the Mound
It has been said that writers should write about what they know - well, singers are at the top of their game when they apply that lesson to their own lives. The passion of John McCutcheon comes through, starting on the first song of his newest album, Sermon on the Mound. No, this isn't a gospel CD, but a passionate love letter to McCutcheon's obvious favorite pastime, baseball. Starting with the album's first song, "Sermon on the Mound," McCutcheon analogizes life to a well-played baseball game, encouraging good behavior, willingness of spirit and a desire to work with others, as redeeming qualities to ensure a happy existence. I'm sure making this album was a happy experience for McCutcheon, who, happily for fans of country and bluegrass, delivered an upbeat and catchy compilation of tunes.
